Take A Coat, Leave A Coat

BUFFALO, Mo. (KY3) - A business in Buffalo recently put a ‘take a coat, leave a coat’ rack outside its doors in case anyone needs the extra warmth.
Amber Miller with Main Street Realty said the coat rack might seem small and cute, but a warm coat could be a lifeline for those who live in the area.
“We really leaned into that catchphrase, ‘Take a coat, leave a coat,’ where if you need a coat, come take one off our rack, and if you want to help, just leave one,” Miller said. “We do have it outside, so that way, if somebody is a little bit embarrassed to ask for a coat or they don’t want to be seen at the coat rack, they can come after hours and grab what they need.”
Miller said she’s seen the need is great here. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the overall poverty rate in the town is around 40 percent.
“My goal was to get coats in the hands of the kids in Dallas County. I have a son in Elementary school, and so I started seeing kids without coats in the middle of winter, and I thought, ‘We have got to do something about this,’ so primarily my request was kid’s coats. We accept donations from infants to adults. We have jackets, but we also receive coveralls, snow boots, any type of warm clothing we gladly accept,” Miller said.
Miller came up with the idea in 2021, so this is the third year of the coat rack. She said every year, the coat rack expands and offers the Dallas County community more during the winter months.
The rack is outside Main Street Reality at 1330 S. Ash Street in Buffalo. It’s available 24/7 until the end of January.
Similar things are happening right here in Springfield, too. KY3′s Coats for Kids coat drive starts next Friday and will run through Jan. 15. You can pickup at all Glo Cleaners locations. More information on this coat drive will be available soon.
